Well, latest confirmations from Blackberry Inc has it that the device, although also known as Venice, will be launched as Blackberry Priv. This confirmation from the company was made known hours after Evan Blass had leaked the name online.

This report was made known in a statement officially declared by the company in a press release which reads thus:

Today, BlackBerry is announcing two new additions to its handheld device roadmap. First, the company will launch a flagship slider device, Priv, which will run on the Android operating system, bringing together the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform. In combination with BlackBerry’s efforts to support Android for Work on the BES12 platform, the new device will offer best in class security for enterprise customers. BlackBerry expects the device to be available late in the calendar year in major markets in-store and online, and will release further details in the coming weeks.

Despite the fact that Blackberry seem to be switching sides to Android OS, the company made it clear that they are not giving up on BES12 platform and will continue producing products and services on it:

While the new device will provide a choice in OS to new and existing customers, the company remains committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which enables industry-leading security and productivity benefits. Second, the company will continue to develop and enhance the BlackBerry 10 operating system and is confirming plans to release platform updates focused on security and privacy enhancements, with version 10.3.3 scheduled to be available in March 2016.

For those who may not know, BES12 is a service that allows you securely and efficiently manage enterprise mobility across iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry devices. You can visit the BES12 resource page here for more information in regard that.

Based on leaked speculations so far, the device will likely be powered by a snapdragon 808 chipset, run on a RAM size of 3GB, likely feature an 18 megapixels back camera with dual LED flash and of course, would run on Android Lollipop OS.

Blackberry has also certified that its first android-powered smartphone, blackberry Priv (previously codenamed as Venice), will be coming by the end of the year. More details in regards pricing and availability as well as specs will likely be revealed in the coming weeks.

  1. It’ll Be a good Comeback for them after being on the sidelines for long. This is a good move in the right direction. They can win Back so of their customers? Let’s hope.

  2. @Jonathan u are right. @Michael why it won’t work? except if the battery capacity is worthless as most blackberry phones did. @faithful that is my concern too (sliding)

  3. Thank God Richard agrees with me…D phone will still come out good tho,.Subscription will b easy now for most people that d networks r still exploiting (was one of them but thanks to Oga Sam adeniyi,I’ve been freed from their shackles)..The battery capacity also has to be topnotch cos recent android fones r really addressing the issue

  4. It’s a nice phone o, I’ve already seen a video showing an evaluation copy, it was fully functional, at long last, a blackberry android phone.

  5. The Blackberry Priv would run on the Android operating
system, bringing together the best of
BlackBerry security and productivity with the
    expansive mobile application ecosystem
available on the Android platform. I really do love this and i cant wait for the launch. But i hope it wont be that expensive like blackberry Porsche.
